Your First DAC: A Buyer's Guide
A guide for first-time DAC buyers covering selection criteria and tips to avoid common mistakes.
When Should You Buy a DAC?
“A DAC will improve your sound” is common advice, but it’s not always the highest priority upgrade. Consider getting one if:
- You’ve upgraded to headphones in the ¥20,000+ range
- You hear noise when plugging directly into your PC or smartphone
- You can’t get enough volume
- You want to play hi-res audio
Conversely, if you’re still using ¥5,000 earbuds, upgrade those first.
Selection Criteria
1. Built-in Amp or DAC Only
DACs come as standalone units (line output only) or as combined DAC/amp units. For your first purchase, a combined unit is the safer choice. It drives headphones directly with no additional investment needed.
Combined DAC/amp examples: Topping DX5, iFi Zen DAC V2, FiiO K7
2. Connectivity
- USB: Essential for PC use. Nearly every DAC supports it
- Optical/Coaxial: Needed for TV or game console connections. Verify support before buying
- Bluetooth: For wireless use. aptX HD or LDAC support ensures higher quality
3. Output Jacks
- 3.5 mm single-ended: Standard headphone jack
- 4.4 mm balanced: For balanced-capable headphones. Can offer a sound quality advantage
- RCA/XLR: Required for connecting to external amps or speakers
If you think you might try balanced in the future, choosing a model with a 4.4 mm output now saves you from upgrading later.
4. Format Support
PCM 32-bit/384 kHz and DSD256 support is more than enough for today’s needs. MQA decoding is only relevant if you listen to MQA content on TIDAL, and given MQA’s uncertain future, it’s a low priority.
Recommendations by Budget
Under ¥10,000
- FiiO KA5 (¥12,000): Dongle form factor, easy to use. 4.4 mm balanced output
At this price, dongles dominate. No need to insist on a desktop unit.
¥15,000 - ¥30,000
- iFi Zen DAC V2 (¥25,000): Warm tonality. MQA support
- Topping DX3 Pro+ (¥22,000): Flat and accurate. Bluetooth support
The sweet spot for a first desktop DAC.
¥30,000 - ¥60,000
- Topping DX5 (¥55,000): Polished DAC/amp combo
- FiiO K7 (¥28,000): Strong driving power, excellent value
At this tier, you get a unit that can serve as your main DAC for years.
Pitfalls to Avoid
Don’t Buy on Specs Alone
A low THD+N or SINAD score doesn’t guarantee a sound you’ll enjoy. Measurements are useful reference points, but they don’t always correlate with listening impressions.
Don’t Fear Chinese Brands
Topping, SMSL, FiiO, and other Chinese manufacturers often deliver better value than Japanese or Western brands at this price point. Quality control has improved significantly in recent years.
Don’t Overspend on Cables
The included USB cable is fine. If you have ¥10,000 earmarked for a cable, put it toward a better DAC instead.
Conclusion
For your first DAC, go with a combined DAC/amp unit and budget ¥20,000-30,000. Prioritize compatibility with your headphones and everyday usability over raw specifications.
