Common Symptoms

“I have to crank the volume knob nearly to max to get a decent level.” “The same settings that used to be fine now sound too quiet.” These symptoms can have multiple causes.

Cause 1: Impedance Mismatch

This is the most common culprit. The amp’s output is insufficient for the headphone’s impedance. It’s especially likely when driving headphones with 300 ohms or higher (HD600, HD650, DT 880 600-ohm, etc.) from portable devices or low-output amps.

Fix:

  • Check your headphone’s impedance and sensitivity ratings
  • Compare them against the amp’s output specifications
  • Consider upgrading to a desktop headphone amp

Cause 2: Gain Setting

Many amps have a gain switch (Low/Mid/High). If it’s inadvertently set to Low, volume may be insufficient.

Fix:

  • Check the gain setting on the amp
  • Use High gain for high-impedance headphones
  • Keep in mind that raising gain also raises the noise floor, so use only as much gain as you need

Cause 3: Insufficient Input Level

If the signal from the DAC to the amp is too low, no amount of volume adjustment on the amp side will produce adequate loudness.

Fix:

  • Check the DAC’s output level setting (fixed vs. variable mode)
  • Make sure the DAC’s volume isn’t turned down
  • Check your RCA/XLR connections — if balanced output is available, try it (balanced typically delivers a higher output level)

Cause 4: PC / Software Issues

The system volume or player software volume being set too low is more common than you’d think.

Fix:

  • Set the OS system volume to 100%
  • Check the volume in your playback software
  • If using exclusive mode (WASAPI Exclusive / ASIO), the OS volume setting may not apply
  • On Windows, check the level in the Sound Settings properties panel

Cause 5: Cable / Connection Issues

Easy to overlook, but a loose connection or damaged cable can be the cause.

Fix:

  • Re-seat the headphone cable
  • For balanced cables, verify the pin configuration is correct
  • Try a different cable
  • Clean the connectors on both the amp and DAC sides

Cause 6: Hardware Failure

If none of the above resolves the issue, the amp itself may have a problem.

Fix:

  • Check for channel imbalance (if only one side is quiet, the volume pot may be worn)
  • Test with a different pair of headphones or IEMs
  • Contact the manufacturer

Troubleshooting Checklist

  1. Check the gain setting
  2. Check OS/software volume
  3. Check DAC output level
  4. Re-seat cables
  5. Compare headphone impedance vs. amp output specs
  6. Test with different equipment to isolate the problem

Working through these steps in order will identify the cause in most cases.
